Chapter 1: The Independent Woman
All the women, who're independent
Throw your hands up at me
All the honeys who makin' money
Throw your hands up at me
– Destiny’s Child
If you are unfamiliar with the song referenced above, I highly suggest you
give it a listen! It is such a feel-good song, and it sets up this book perfectly.
The narrative of the independent woman is definitely something that has
gained popularity over the past few years. More and more women are
looking for ways to be more independent and to take care of themselves.
This all starts with finances. When you are able to take care of your
finances, the other areas in your life are much easier to get in line. Women
know more about finances than they actually let on. Sometimes it just takes
a confidence boost in order to tap into the knowledge that you need in order
to make good financial decisions and become that independent woman.
Becoming financially independent is an incredibly important step in your
life. However, there is definitely a learning curve that takes place. If you
have never seriously considered your finances and set financial goals, then
you will need to make some extra effort in these areas. This also means that
there are going to be some changes and alterations you need to make to
your lifestyle.
Let’s first define what, exactly, “financially independent” means. When a
woman is financially independent, she has her own income and is able to
manage all aspects of her finances. She has the power to do what she wants
and set her own goals for her future. Financial independence also means
that you have enough money to take care of yourself without having to
stress about it or needing to rely on others to help you. Living paycheck to
paycheck can be stressful, and being financially independent is the best way
to work your way out of this cycle. This is the ideal goal for every person
because money tends to be the biggest worry in most people's lives. If you
have gotten your money sorted out and you know that you are financially
secure, then you will be able to free up a lot of mental energy for other
decisions in other areas of your life. This means that it will be a lot easier to
start excelling in areas such as your career, relationships, and general
personal growth.
As you read through this book, you are going to come across many different
steps you can implement and habits you need to break. These things are
going to lead you into a state of financial security and allow you to be more
independent with your money. However, there are going to be some people
who will give you a bit of a side eye when they realize that you are acting
differently. If your friends and family are used to you acting and spending
your money in a certain way, then they are definitely going to want to know
why you have changed. Some people are going to react very positively to
you because they understand that you are on a journey that’s going to
improve your financial health over the long term. Other people might
actually have a negative reaction to this. They may not understand why you
can no longer go out as much, why you no longer put money down on girls'
trips without taking a moment to think about it, or why you have changed
your mindset on spending and handling your money. This is definitely part
of the process that not a lot of people talk about.
If you are going to make drastic changes to the way you handle your
money, you should be prepared to have difficult conversations with your
friends and family. It is so important that you stay the course and keep
thinking about your financial goals. Even if other people don’t fully
understand what you are doing, they will get on board when you are able to
show them the results of the changes you made. This is also a great
opportunity to find other people who are on a financial health journey just
like you are. Creating a community of other women around you who are
looking to better their finances is such a great way to improve your outlook
on your finances and to get some personal input throughout your journey.
