Chapter 1: The Basics you Need to Know About
the Stock Market
Before I started investing on the stock market, I used to hate waking up
early. It was a struggle every morning and that set the tone for the rest of the
day usually – everything just seemed like such a huge task that I did not
want to do. I wondered how all the success gurus from different fields could
preach waking early to earn that success did it. I wondered why I could not
do it as effortlessly as they preached.
After I started trading on the stock market, I realized that I was seeking a
flaw within myself that was not there. It was not that I could not wake up
early easily. Rather, there was nothing enticing me to put forth that
dedication. I hated my office job so of course, I was not in a rush to get to
it. In fact, most everything within me wanted to run away from it.
But since I found trading and investing on the stock market, I can wake up
long before my alarm clock goes off at 4:30 AM most mornings. The stock
market allows trading from 8:30 AM EST but there is premarket work that
needs to be done for a successful trading day. I am invigorated by doing that
work and watching the fruits of my work accumulate later in the trading
day. That invigoration has spread to other parts of my life and I even
allocated time to work out and spend time with my family during those
early morning hours. Having that one thing that I look forward to
participating in has made me look forward to embracing the day every day.
I am not saying any of this to preach the importance of starting the day
early. Rather I am letting you know the boost of confidence that can be
gained from investing in the stock market. The challenges are real but it is
because of them I am invigorated. This is not a career for the faint of heart
yet I love it because it has ignited a fire within me!
But that fire was not an automatic state of affairs. I first had to get over the
learning curve that comes with being a trader. There is a lot to learn. Even
after 2 decades in this career, there is still a lot that I do not know. In fact, I
feel like I learn something new every day. But that is part of the charm of
this career. It is never stagnant. The stock market is continually changing as
technology and the different industries of the global economy drive it
forward.
The most basic thing you need to learn about on your path of education
about the stock market is what stocks are and how they work to drive the
stock market like a well-oiled machine. This chapter is dedicated to that
first milestone in your education.
Stocks are the basic unit in the stock market, which this book is largely
focused on. Therefore, it would only be right to start by defining what
stocks are and why it is a good idea to invest in them.
