Тони - сын итальянских эмигрантов. После смерти матери его усыновляет немецкоговорящая семья в Швейцарии, однако из-за физических и психических недугов его выдворяют из страны и против воли отправляют в Италию. Там он годами живёт в страшной нищете на берегу реки По. Иногда ему удаётся находить подённую работу, но он остаётся верен своей страсти – рисунку. Случайная встреча со скульптором Ренато Марино Маццакурати и совет заняться живописью открывают ему путь к свободе. Это история Атонио Лигабуэ, революционера-одиночки в современном искусстве.
