1936 год. Джованни Комини - самый молодой федеральный секретарь национал-фашистсткой партии Италии. Его вызывают в Рим, чтобы поручить деликатное дело: он должен следить за Габриеле Д'Аннунцио и не допускать неприятностей с его стороны. Бенито Муссолини опасается, что Д'Аннуцио, известный всей стране поэт, может навредить союзу Италии с фашистской Германией. Комини - всего лишь маленькая шестеренка в колесе войны, которое скоро начнет раскручиваться. Верность партии и восхищение гением Д'Аннунцио вызовут внутренние противоречия в душе молодого человека и подвергнут риску его карьеру.
