Elon Reeve Musk (born June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa) is an American entrepreneur, engineer and billionaire. Founder, CEO and Chief Engineer of SpaceX; investor, CEO, and product architect at Tesla; founder of The Boring Company; co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; owner of Twitter (X).

Musk was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. He studied at the University of Pretoria for a while, and at the age of 17 he moved to Canada. He attended Queen's University in Kingston and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics and physics. He was born on 28 June 1971 and grew up in Pretoria, South Africa, the son of engineer Errol Musk and his wife, model Maye Musk (née Haldeman). His father was a partial owner of the Zambian emerald mines near Lake Tanganyika. His parents gave him the name of his great-grandfather John Elon Haldeman, who was born in 1872. The Haldemanns, his maternal ancestors, were Swiss Germans. They immigrated from Europe to New York during the American Revolutionary War, from where they subsequently dispersed to the Midwest.
