Холли Мартинс, автор бульварных романов, в надежде получить работу приезжает в послевоенную Вену по приглашению старинного приятеля Гарри Лайма. Увы, буквально накануне тот погиб в результате несчастного случая.
По мнению полицейского Кэллоуэя, Лайм был темной личностью, рэкетиром и спекулянтом. Мартинс решает провести собственное расследование, чтобы снять с друга обвинения в преступлениях, которые, как он уверен, тот не совершал.
