Social loafing—a phenomenon where individuals contribute less effort when working in a group compared to when working alone—can significantly hinder team productivity and morale. It often arises when individual contributions are hard to measure or when team members feel disconnected from the task or each other. Fortunately, there are effective strategies leaders and project managers can implement to reduce social loafing and foster stronger team engagement.

1. Increase Individual Accountability

One of the most powerful ways to counter social loafing is by making individual contributions visible and measurable. When people know their work is being monitored and evaluated, they are more likely to take responsibility and stay committed to their role.
