На дереве, где 150 лет назад была повешена и сожжена обвинённая в колдовстве, глухонемая племянница провинциального священника видит Деву Марию. Случайным свидетелем произошедшего становится репортёр Джерри Фенн, приехавший в этот городок за очередной оккультной историей. На следующий день девушка обретает слух и возможность говорить, а вскоре излечивает больного мальчика. Молва расползается, Ватикан присылает представителя зафиксировать чудо, епископ планирует сделать из дерева святыню, а репортёр Фенн, изучая историю городка, находит много подозрительного.
