There are now more channels of information than ever before – we get news from social networks, mailing lists and instant messengers. New media appear daily, everyone can turn their personal blog into a public publication with extensive content, especially noticeable in the field of fashion and lifestyle. After the explosion of interest in fashion bloggers a few years ago, the wave began to decline, and the audience hungry for visual content found sources of new beautiful shots in the actively developing niche of independent magazines.
Sicky can be called an album rather than a magazine – the online edition publishes only filming. The editorial board keeps visual content at a very high level: avant-garde editorials are often not inferior in quality to those published by leading magazines like Dazed and i-D.
Cake, as well as Sicky, focuses on the visual component, but in addition to photos, they also have a video. The magazine is published in both print and digital versions, while they do not duplicate each other. The aesthetics of Cake are the 90s and girls next door, "random" shots and Polaroids, that is, everything that is not often found in the usual publications.
PIBE (Play It By Ear) is a very young London project that has already released three printed issues. Despite the standard set of "fashion, beauty, art" in the description, among the materials you can find, for example, a photo report about the indigenous population of the Naga forests on the border of India and Myanmar or analytical texts about subcultural painting.
In the gloomy-gothic Nasty, the section with texts about culture is much more extensive than in other magazines from this collection - there are many interviews with little-known but noteworthy artists, reviews of exhibitions and reviews of arthouse performances. Special attention should be paid to thePhotographycolumn with shootings that do not belong to the fashion category.
Teeth is another indie magazine with high-quality filming and news of art and music, which the editors refer to as underground. From many similar projects, Teeth is distinguished by the selection of models for educationals: such a wide variety of gender, ethnicity and types is rarely found even in independent publications.
Modern matter is a project of the OMO creates team, a London-based design studio specializing in branding, catalog production and other printed products. Among the studio's clients are art galleries, brands Saint Laurent and Puma and large retailers like Asos. Modern matter is published as a kind of team portfolio, respectively, the content and layout are maintained at a very high level.
The King-kong project produces printed issues twice a year and also focuses on fashion and art, but with an emphasis on the latter: most of the material is made up of articles about artists from around the world using various mediums – from paintings and collages to land art. The digital version of the magazine does not repeat the printed one and is regularly updated. The section with surreal videos is especially noteworthy in it.
