Top 10 Magazines of the week
Frieze
The respected British art magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary this year: since the beginning of the 90s, the pages of Frieze have analyzed all aspects of the existence of contemporary art - from artists' studios to auction prices. A lot of time and attention is paid to the latter also because Frieze largely represents the interests of one of the most hype art fairs in the world.
Blend
Once published only in Dutch, Blend magazine has rebranded and has been published in English for a year now (4 issues per year), choosing the most unbeaten topics for spreads and articles, relevant, but not repeating with the themes of other similar publications. Best of all, Blend looks like a portfolio of artists printed in excellent quality on glossy A3 paper.
Elephant
The latest British magazine about contemporary art, design and illustration works out in detail the theme of the issue - from Japanese artists to collage techniques, regularly meets with actors from the art world and publishes detailed articles on current news. So far, only 6 issues of Elephant have been published (the release schedule is once every three months), but the brainchild of the respected English art publishing house Magma Books has already loudly declared itself.
Juxtapoz
The Californian magazine on alternative contemporary art has been published since 1994 and talks about art as part of youth culture - from erotic illustration and street art to portfolios of tattoo artists and surfboard designers. The editors legalized low-brow art and pop-surrealism and, with the departure of the first editor-in-chief in 2006, headed for alternative, but still very catchy art.
Idomenee
An elusive and irregularly published, but very exciting magazine about contemporary art, where it is not always easy to explain the choice of an art director, but you can learn a lot about the long-discovered names in contemporary art. Idomenee is published as an album - a minimum of text, almost solid images, which you want to keep on the bookshelf for a very long time.
Art in America
The monthly American art magazine, which focused mainly on the New York scene, has been published since the 10s of the 20th century. In his field of vision are current American and European artists exhibiting in galleries. Art in America is interesting to read, despite the fact that it is addressed to art historians and curators: the magazine is written in a lively and not boring language and publishes news and important announcements.
Artforum
Another respected American art magazine has been published since the 60s and focuses on analytical articles on contemporary art, essays and the author's opinion of famous journalists and art historians. Artforum teaches you to talk about art and chooses non-obvious characters for review.
Acne Paper
Published twice a year, the sophisticated magazine Acne Paper, published in English with the participation of the Swedish brand Acne, tells about beauty, regardless of its origin and time of creation. The subject matter of the magazine is quite arbitrary, and on the pages of one issue there are a combination of fashion shootings, archival photographs from the life of modernist artists and lengthy essays on church art or Edvard Munch. Acne Paper can be flipped through like a book with beautiful pictures, but it's more fun to read it without missing materials, from cover to cover.
Exit
Detailed and zeitgeist, Exit magazine has been published twice a year since 2000. On its pages there are news about current artists and photographers, photo shoots from legends of the fashion industry and announcements of the main upcoming events. Exit focuses on young authors and those who can become their heroes.
01 Magazine
A new Canadian visual culture magazine with a focus on non-mainstream emerging artists: 01 pays attention to photographers, contemporary painters and installers, doing short interviews to view their work. Each of the 6 published issues has a unifying rather conditional theme, which does not prevent editors from collecting interesting new names in one issue.
